The luggage
store is pleased to present the closing reception for the exhibition, World
Wide-Hustle(rs):A Homage to the Hustle, featuring a lively multidisciplinary installation
by Robin David and
Angela
Angel. This collaborative
pays homage to markets and workers across the
globe. Inspired
by true narratives from Chile,
India, Mexico, the Philippines
and Tanzania,
World Wide Hustle(rs) WWH tells the stories of street vendors, public markets, transportation workers,
farming villages and scavenging communities contributing to and defying
the
global economy.
Photographs,
paintings, "paintographs," murals, film, installations and other integrative pieces are integrated
into a five wall scene storybook layout. Each “scenario” features
collaborative and solo works by the artists.
Taking you through the
"mercado" and the
"palengke", this show pays homage to the hustle - the daily grind of
food, hand-me-down goods and touristlandia. The show presents the
smarts
and innovation of "third-world" entrepreneurship to the gamble and
danger of shadow economies. It speaks more than mere fashionable street
lingo, much deeper than "working hard" to get by, but the origins and
realities of the market's supply and demand.
David and Angel
have use the word 'hustle' to back up stories from bees in the farmlands
to
surrogate mothers in the third world. This body of work is informed by both a
social documentary and experimental collaboration.
The exhibition
features almost 80 works. Using paper planes and recycled fruit Angel and
David
take the viewer on a trip across the global shuffle of goods and trade.
World Wide Hustlers is part of the luggage store’s Short
Cuts Program which seeks to identify, support and emerge new
and/or young
curators and artists. The luggage
store Short Cuts
program, now in its tenth year is funded by the National
Endowment for the Arts.
