Thomas Dimuzio
San Francisco-based Dimuzio is one of those unsung artistic
figures whose influence and abilities have substantially outstripped his visibility. Composer, multi-instrumentalist, sound designer, experimental electronic musician, collaborator and recording studio owner - Dimuzio has been busy doing his thing(s) since the late 1980's, but is still only known to a small circle of electronic music enthusiasts. A true sonic alchemist who can seemingly create music events out of almost anything, Dimuzio's listed sound sources on his various CDs include everything from "modified 10 speed bicycle" and "resonating water pipe" to short-wave radios, loops, samplers and even normal instruments such as clarinet and trumpet. And while his wide range of musical interests make it impossible to pin a label on him, Dimuzio clearly has an insider's knowledge of older experimental musical forms such as musique concrete and electroacoustic, as well as more current ambient, industrial, noise and post-techno styles. Among his collaborations include Chris Cutler, Fred Frith, Dan Burke (Illusion Of Safety), David Lee Myers, Nick Didkovsky, Paul Haslinger, Due Process, 5uu's, Matmos, Wobbly, DJ Qbert, and many others.

Tom Nunn solo CD Release performance of
"Identity" Edgetone Records
also sets by
RTD3
Axallto

Tom Nunn has designed, built and performed with original musical instruments since 1976, having received a B.Mus. and M.A. in music composition from the University of Texas at Austin and S.U.N.Y. Stony Brook, and post-graduate work at U.C. San Diego. His instruments typically utilize commonly available materials, are sculptural in appearance, utilize contact microphones for amplification, and are designed specifically for improvisation with elements of ambiguity, unpredictability and nonlinearity.
In addition to the nearly 100 instruments he has made, Tom has performed extensively throughout the San Francisco Bay Area for over 25 years, as well as in other parts of the U.S., Canada and Europe, both as soloist and with other musicians. Tom has performed with the groups Rotodoti, Off Ramp, Stritch, Twine, Toax, Reel Change and Ghost In The House, and currently works with Axallto and RTD3.
He has appeared on a number of recordings, including his most recent solo CD, "Identity." In 1998, he completed writing and self-published Wisdom of The Impulse: on the nature of musical free improvisation, a book that examines various aspects of this illusive art and presents a theoretical foundation for creative listening, analysis and discussion. Tom has also written a number of articles about the use of experimental instruments and improvisation in publications such as Experimental Musical Instruments, Musicworks and Leonardo.

8pm:
Charity Chan - Accordion
Suzanne Thorpe - Electronics/Flute
Paul Scriver - Saxophone/Bass Clarinet
9pm: Jordan Glenn and Anantha Krishna (tabla)

Charity Chan's live performances focus on the evocation of alternative timbres from the piano/accordion and the combination of these sounds with more traditional performance techniques. Her improvisations are also informed by the immediacy of physical gesture in live performance. While Charity's creative work concentrates itself in the area of contemporary improvisation (extended piano and amplified accordion), she has also worked and studied extensively in the classical and contemporary classical idioms.

DSS(LA)
Aaron Drake - FM Transmitter Feedback, Talkboy Deluxe, Assorted Electronics
Phillip Stearns - Mixer Feedback, FM Transmitter Feedback, Misc. Custom Electronics

Pink Canoes (OAK)
Ava Mendoza - guitar/electronics
Zachary Watkins - electronics/mythical creatures
Travis Johns - bass/electronics
Noah Philips - guitar/electronics
Aram Shelton - saxophone/electronics

DSS work in both acoustic and electronic mediums. Their sonic palate is composed of mixer feedback, DIY and custom hacked circuitry, FM transmitters, and (amplified) viola. Performances involve a mix of free improv, graphic score interpretation, and audience interaction. At the crux of their performance practice is the use of FM transmitters which serve to tie each of our instruments together and diffuse the notion of control amongst the group.

Pink Canoes = loud. improvised. and then quiet. and still improvised. everyone plays instruments. sometimes they don't play their instruments and then play them later on. other times their instruments are knob-oriented and feed back a lot. we've been told that in rare cases, these knob-instruments ARE their instruments... some of them like cartoons. others like horror movies. one of them has a kitty named godzilla. most of them play in other bands which are equally as good. The "the" in their name is optional.
