“Crestfallen: a
selection of Americana " is a body of work comprised of a series of
shield-shaped inscriptions on wood, water colors on paper of pocket
knives; and a collection of hand made balls. The
work is informed by over 20 years of Flanagan’s study of the Roman
Alphabet, language and American history .”Crestfallen" is Flanagan’s
investigations into the iconography of the emerging American Republic. Flanagan's work is infused with the conflation of early sloganeering and the
political and commerical flummery of the recent past and present, as
well as colloquial speech. In his work, he attempts with certain ironies to "apprehend" the complicated and complex position that America finds
itself in today.
Flanagan currently works as a Book
Conservator/Bookbinder for the San Francisco Pubilc Library, and has
been a construction worker, factory worker, carpenter's apprentice,
musician, bookseller, and letterpress printer. He was the late
Margaret Kilgallen's mentor.
